How can I purchase a Kirio system?

Kirio is sold and installed by Kirio Certified dealers and (most states require) professionally licensed contractors.

To get started and understand the installation process, please contact your local Kirio Dealer.

Can I install Kirio myself?

No. Kirio is installed for your satisfaction and reliability only by professional dealers. Once Kirio is installed, you can easily make countless adjustments to suit your needs.

These devices and appliances may connect to line voltage and improper installation can lead to faults or serious injuries. Further, opening of some of these systems’ enclosures may void the warranties.

Please contact your local Kirio Dealer for more details on the process.

Does Kirio provide an open API?

As a startup, we are planning to release an API to the community as soon as feasible. APIs require documentation, support and reliability. Kirio feels that quickly releasing an unsupported API is worse than no API at all. In the meantime, we will be releasing an IF (IFTTT) channel and integration with other partners to allow our more advanced users to interact with their homes.

Do you support web and Wi-Fi-only connected devices?

As long as the web connected devices publishes an API or allow 3rd party integration, Kirio will develop the software drivers to allow our product to interact with those systems. Our team is fostering and seeking relationships with popular manufacturers to integrate their technology. At Kirio, we take it upon ourself to develop those software drivers so we can quickly respond to our customers needs.

Do you support any multimedia systems or services?

With so many options available for music and video, initially Kirio will provide simple interaction with some popular music systems. At our core, Kirio is about the main systems that operate a home. We feel that the market has neglected these crucial systems even though they keep us comfortable and energy efficient. However, we remain flexible to fulfill our customers needs.

If Kirio connects to my security system/video camera, do you offer monitoring or video storage?

Kirio can connect to your home alarm system and alert you to events happening in your home.

We do not disable or disrupt your current monitoring service or video recording systems.

We do not offer security monitoring services or video storage. If an image or video is captured due to an event within your home, that media is kept for the duration of the notification. Users should use their mobile application or desktop computer for any media storage.

Does Kirio support integrative technologies like Apple's HomeKit, Amazon’s Alexa or upcoming home automation integration software?

Kirio realizes that the home is part of a larger ecosystem. Hence, it is our priority to allow 3rd party systems to provide data and control to Kirio and vice-versa. We currently support:

  • Apple HomeKit: Launch the Home app and and follow the HomeKit prompts. You will then be able to use Siri to send commands to Kirio. Your current scenarios will be imported. You will need to run the Home app if you add a new device or sceneario for HomeKit to discover them.
  • Amazon Alexa: Search for the Kirio Alexa Home Skills. Ask Alexa to discover your devices. Your devices will appear in the Alexa app.
  • Google Home, IFTTT, Stringify...: Support is slated for release in the Fall of 2017. Please follow our news to stay current.

I have an existing home with no easy way to install new wires. Can Kirio work in my house?

Every home is different. Kirio uses some wires because of their reliability. However, there are many well proven wireless technologies that can directly work with Kirio. Please contact your Kirio Dealer to discuss your options and check out our compatibility section.
Kirio is sold and installed by Kirio Certified dealers and (most states require) professionally licensed contractors.

How does Kirio security compare to other home automation companies?

We match or exceed the security implemented by all other companies doing business on the Internet. We secure by encrypting data between your mobile phone, Kirio web services, and your home devices. We go a step further by using standard ports on your router and do not require Internet connectivity or risky port forwarding. Only connection to your local network or Wi-Fi, to enable control from our app is needed. In the absence of a router, a 1-on-1 (adhoc) connection between your mobile app and Kirio base is available.

In addition, the pairing and sign up process for the Kirio base simply requires scanning a QR code on the Kirio device and physically confirming this process with the Kirio magic button. When your Kirio is connected to the Internet, your data is anonymously stored since we have none of your personal information. Local interaction with the Kirio system is also encrypted, though you will get a security warning from your phone operating system.

What kind of environmental sensors does Kirio have?

Kirio has a 9 axis motion sensor with high sensitivity to ground motion and building vibration. These sensors combined with the barometer (atmospheric pressure) are used to make assessments about the weather. When Kirio is allowed to connect to the Internet, your general location is also used to determine rain, wind, or snow conditions. This information is used by AutoLearn to manage a sprinkler system, for example. Temperature and humidity sensors are also included in the Kirio device.

What is the purpose of the QR code hidden in the device?

The QR (Quick Response) code is the unique ID of your Kirio system. It is used along with the main Kirio button on the center of the device to pair your smartphone with your Kirio in your home. The QR is just a shortcut to enter detailed information about your setup. We use QR extensively as a digital mark to automate an anonymous sign-on, which is key for your security and privacy.

If the internet goes down…does Kirio still work locally?

Absolutely - Yes. The machine learning platform AutoLearn and remote access to your home are the only services that require internet connectivity. If the internet goes down, your local control of Kirio will remain the same.

What is the round Kirio button on the center of the device?

The Kirio button is known as the “Magic Button.” It allows you to interact with the app and gives you the ability to pair devices.

What does Kirio mean?

Kirio is derived from the Japanese word 岐路, Kiro which means intersection, and I/O, which means input and output. Kirio stands at the intersection of all your devices and appliances with full control and monitoring.

How do you handle system updates?

Kirio firmware is designed to automatically update when better features, security software, critical updates, or high level maintenance is required. The update system monitors your Kirio base and will revert to a previously working setup if the update was to break your installation.

When I am outside my home with web connection enabled, the app is unable to find my system, what can I do?

Multiple factors can affect your connectivity. It is possible that your local network has lost connectivity due to ISP or modem failure. The app will indicate that our web services is unable to connect with your home. It will also indicate the last time it has connected to your Kirio.

You can connect to your dashboard to see if Kirio Web Services is experiencing any issues.

Unless your Kirio is having trouble (beyond the factors listed above), you can still maintain full control using your local network.

Can multiple people use Kirio via the mobile app at the same time?

Yes. All paired smartphones will have access based on their profiles set and maintained by the master phone. In the case of 2 or more users adjusting the same resources, Kirio will use the last valid setting, unless a priority user has set a limit.

How does AutoLearn work?

AutoLearn can be categorized into 3 intelligent and assistive technologies. Based on the equipment present in your home, AutoLearn will allow obvious interaction (e.g. window and heater) with no homeowner setup. This would also cover obvious security actions (unusual water flow) to protect your house.

Additionally, AutoLearn analyzes how you and your family use certain devices to arrive at a setting which can emulate your actions (outdoor lights, dusk/dawn pattern) without requiring you to program Kirio. Sometimes, your actions can be a complex combination of time of the day, season, and a myriad of other factors. Looking at past data, AutoLearn will send the right command at the right time looking at multiple events (you usually close the garage door on weekdays, so there is a high chance that you also do that on weekends after you leave the house). Finally, for AutoLearn suggestive and predictive technologies, the data sent to the cloud is anonymized and then compared to known failure patterns which can recommend changes in your home. We make extensive use of differential privacy techniques so that you are not personally identifiable.

Where and how is the data collected from my home stored?

The data generated by your home is encrypted and stored on your Kirio base within your home.

In the event that you opt for the convenience of controlling your home from virtually anywhere, we obtain and store your anonymous data on our secure and encrypted database. This information remains anonymous and encrypted at every level. In the event you interact with a Certified Installer, they will maintain their own customer database which is not linked to our cloud-based databases.

If my local network gets compromised or if Kirio servers get somehow penetrated, will the thieves be able to unlock my doors?

No. Only commands originating from a previously paired smartphone are accepted. The pairing algorithms use constantly changing access codes. If our database was penetrated, this changing key would have to be provided prior to accessing your system. Of course, Kirio is only as secured as the systems it commands, and local network on which it resides. So, basic security measures and common-sense reflexes should always be observed.

Does Kirio replace my thermostat, my …?

Kirio can potentially replace many of the devices you have in your home. In some cases, it will save you the hassle of purchasing additional equipment. Many still like having familiar and traditional wall-mounted devices, while others relish the idea of having less do more. In either case, you should discuss your personal preferences with your Kirio Dealer.

I just moved in to a home where the previous homeowner had a Kirio system, how can I get started?

Download the Kirio app and in “settings”, follow the guide to reset the Kirio device for your home. This reset will allow you to start with your own setup, with no existing profiles or preferences.

Where are Kirio systems manufactured?

Kirio systems are all assembled in the State of Washington, USA. The software and hardware are designed in Seattle, WA as well.

What are the requirements to install Kirio in an existing home?

Initially, Kirio is being installed in new construction and major remodels because there is a greater opportunity to run control wires for the most reliable setup. However, we have wireless solutions to enable existing homes to take advantage of Kirio. Please contact your certified professional to explore those solutions.

I have a special project with unique appliances. Can Kirio support them or must I buy from a restrictive list?

No, as a builder or architect, we provide you with a web-based tool to look up a database of currently supported products and their respective control options. For technologies we do not support yet, we allow you to submit the specific appliance information. Our engineering group then quickly gets back to you on the integration feasibility and timeline. We believe we have the most extensive device support across brand names and product types. Our growing library of software and hardware support is the widest and deepest on the market. We are certain that we will make even the most complex project a great success.

Who is responsible for supporting my homebuyers or the device after installation?

You will most likely work with a Kirio certified installer or will have certified one of your own employees. These professionals are trained to address most of your issues and have access to tools to ensure the reliability of our technology. These professionals will escalate directly to Kirio if they uncover a situation they cannot resolve. Your homeowner can reach the installer from within the Kirio apps and from the web. Kirio also takes support questions directly via our web site and e-mail. In addition, we maintain how-to materials and community assisted forums to get you going as quickly as possible. Ultimately, Kirio will support homeowners, designers, and installers in situations where a problem remains unresolved.

Our mantra is simplicity: We strive to design systems that are easy to use and install.

What is the expected operational lifetime of the Kirio base?

The bases are designed to remain operational past the useful life of the oldest systems it controls or monitors. We expect a lifetime endurance of all the components. Internally, the database software is allowed to compress historical data. Some serviceable components like the rechargeable batteries and some sensors may require periodic change or cleaning.

We will continue to develop our software and app to evolve with the current technologies, remain fresh, and be backward compatible.

What is the warranty policy and process for replacing the product?

Our warranty provision is to replace or repair your Kirio product with the same or current model within [1 year]. If your device stops when operated within the specifications and installed by our certified professionals, we guarantee to expedite replacements of any serviceable components.

What if my Kirio system is unresponsive or displaying a red flashing LED?

Your system will display a flashing red LED if it detects a fault due to improper power, installation, or wiring. Depending where the fault occurred and if your network is operational, additional information about the issue may be available. Please contact any Dealer or Kirio directly for a prompt assessment.

Is Kirio able to manage water use, electric use, solar production?

Yes. Your certified professional can install flowmeters and whole house energy management systems which will feed directly into Kirio. Some solar inverters provide some data either directly from the house or via a web-based API. Please consult the list of supported services.

Remember, your certified Kirio professional can design a unique solution which would fit your budget and requirements.

I am a green builder with a need to monitor the performance of the homes I build. Is the AutoLearn data only available to the homeowner?

Because the homeowner is in control of the access rights of his Kirio and can rescind that access, builders and architects are encouraged to seek authorization from their homeowners. Once access in granted, a special reporting-only dashboard can be accessed. In commercial settings, the building owner/manager can customize the operating environment further to fulfill code requirements and building operating performance. Access rights and data sharing options are under the building manager’s control as well.

How long does it take to plan, install, and commission the Kirio base?

The earlier you become involved with a Certified Installer, the greater the chance of a successful project. Planning takes a few minutes to share your intent for control. Wiring and device installation vary by the type of systems you specified. Commission and final trim out takes generally less than 3 hours to complete.

Can my electrician install Kirio and its supporting systems?

If your electrician is certified as a Kirio Installer, s/he will have access to all the software and tools to properly commission the system. You cannot successfully install Kirio without the commissioning software only available to trained and certified installers.

However, working with or being a certified Kirio Pro, your electrician can receive a print out of our installation plans. These plans cover wiring, device selection, placements and specific installation instructions. Your electrician or HVAC pro can install the supporting systems, but the system still requires a professional to trim out.

Does this product use line voltage or require specialty mounting hardware?

Kirio bases are designed to fit standard 2-gang wall boxes. The system is a low voltage device running up to 48V DC. No specialty mounting hardware is necessary.

What is a Kirio Pro and how different is s/he from a Dealer?

A Kirio Professional or Certified Installer is individually certified by Kirio, Inc, to install Kirio products. This installer received training and is registered with Kirio to purchase devices for their own project. As an employee to any official company, this company becomes an authorized dealer. A dealer can spec out projects and enter customer requirements in the Jewel system. However, they cannot complete an installation without this installer. Dealers can recruit Kirio Pros or other dealers with a Certified Installer to complete a system commission.

What are the basic requirements for becoming a professional installer?

To become a professional installer, you must at least have an official state low-voltage license.
